Set up Client

To set up an Aspera client, install the client software and the license or entitlement, and create a system user with a writeable directory that will be used for transfers.

  1. Install one of the Aspera clients, and license or entitlement.

For example, install the Desktop Client, which will be used as an example in the rest of these instructions. A second HST Server installation can also be used, as the transfer UI is the same. Use the simplest installation method available for your system. If you need direction, see the guide for your client. (or server).

    CAUTION:

Do not install a client on the same machine as the HST Server.

  2. If your host and client machines are not on the same network, configure your firewall so that the server's machine's IP address is accessible.
  3. Select an existing system user account, or create a new one, to use for transfers.
  4. In the user's home directory, create a directory to use for transfers.
  5. Make sure that the directory it is readable, and writeable by an external users (other).
  6. Add one or more files to the directory, to use for transfers.
  7. Test an SSH connection from the client to the server machine.

If you cannot make an SSH connection with the server machine, you will not be able to transfer files.
